Change of Seasons

It is time for a change of seasons. The robin I saw outside my office window on Monday confirms it.

You may believe that robins are a harbinger of spring, but this unexpected visitor must have been ringing in a different season entirely – tax filing season.

Yes, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) began accepting your 2025 federal tax returns on Monday. However, with the potential threat of another government shutdown looming later this week, it is unclear whether this tax filing season will be unnecessarily interrupted.

Tax filing season is a celebration of everything American – the freedom to calculate your own income taxes instead of having the government do it for you, the byzantine tax rules that slow down every company’s efforts to report taxable income to you thanks to the natural inefficiencies of a republican form of government, and the competition to file your taxes as quickly as possible if you are expecting a refund.

To file your taxes, you will need tax documents from LPL Financial and other financial custodians.

The good news is that all of your tax documents from LPL Financial are available to you the moment they are issued through your AccountView. Simply click here and choose the Log In tab or the Sign Up tab to get started.

The less good news is that not all of your tax documents are available right now. Due to the aforementioned byzantine tax rules, it takes time for companies to accurately report their tax information to LPL Financial for inclusion on your tax forms.

To help you avoid being forced to amend your tax returns, LPL Financial waits until they have a fairly high confidence in the data they receive before issuing your tax forms. Therefore, LPL Financial releases tax forms in several waves:

January 17 (available in AccountView, mailed the following week)

  • Form 1099-Rs
  • Form 1099s for accounts holding investments with the lowest risk for income reclassification

January 23 and February 6

  • Form 1099s for accounts holding investments with lower risk for income reclassification

February 14

  • Form 1099s for accounts holding investments with higher risk for income reclassification or where information was provided to LPL Financial after January 31.
  • If final information is not available, LPL Financial will provide a preliminary draft of your Form 1099 for you to review. This will only be available through AccountView.

February 28 and March 11

  • Forms 1099s for accounts holding investments where companies did not provide LPL Financial with required information in a timely manner.

In our experience, a vast majority of our clients receive the tax forms required to file their taxes by mid-February. To view and download your tax forms as soon as they are available, please use AccountView.
