CliffhangerSeptember 23, 2020 -
Categorized in: IAG News
Over the course of this year my fifth grade daughter and I have had a fairly consistent bedtime routine. About 45 minutes before lights out, we sit together and I read her a chapter from the Harry Potter series. We are now reading the fifth book of the series, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.”
Almost every chapter we read follows a similar pattern that builds through the book which my daughter finds a little frustrating on occasion. The beginning of the chapter provides some background and moves the story along, but the ends of the chapters are typically cliffhangers that leave her imagination wondering where the story goes from there.
The tension continues to build throughout each book, and then around three-quarters of the way through it becomes more intense. The pace of action picks up, characters face larger challenges, and loose ends begin to weave themselves toward the book’s finale.
Today we have 99 days left in 2020. The author of this year has been very creative. It started like any other year – full of optimism and cheer. A villain named COVID-19 appeared in the early chapters and quickly created fear and uncertainty. Cries for social justice and social unrest erupted in the midst of the pandemic. Intense natural disasters such as derechos in Iowa, wildfires in the West, and (so far) nine named tropical storms making landfall in the U.S. added to the challenges.
As we look ahead to the finale of 2020 we only see tensions rising. Battles over a Supreme Court nomination appear imminent. The Presidential election will be held on November 3 with results potentially unknown until weeks later. COVID-19 infections appear to be accelerating as people tire of social distancing measures. How will all of these cliffhangers be resolved?
We simply do not know where this chapter goes from here – either in reality or in the financial markets.
At IAG we focus on the entire book of our families’ lives. Sure, there are opportunities that present themselves in every annual chapter and we love to help our clients develop those plot lines. However, our most rewarding role is assisting our clients in weaving together all of the personal and financial twists and turns in their lives into their book.
As tempting as it is to let today’s cliffhangers capture your imagination, remember there are still many chapters remaining for us to help you resolve your plot lines and create your family’s book.
