Babies born on September 11, 2001, turn 18 years old today.
They were born on a day that altered our entire country’s view of the world. On that day Americans’ belief that our country was safe from terrorist attacks was destroyed along with thousands of lives.
Those born 18 years ago have lived their entire lives conscious of our country’s vulnerability and less certain of its future. They cannot recall joyfully greeting relatives at the airport gate as they get off their plane. They have been taught to say something if they see something from early on.
Those turning 18 today have grown up in a very different America than those who are celebrating a birthday that is a multiple of 18 years today. Those who are turning 36, 54, 72, or 90 today were born in 1983, 1965, 1947, or 1929. Each of those generations has their own unique American story with their own challenges.
What kind of America will babies born today experience in their lifetimes? It is impossible to tell. However, if previous generations are any indication, there will be significant challenges they will need to overcome and opportunities to grasp.
If you turn 90 today, you have survived the Great Depression, World War II, the Vietnam War, civil unrest, the Cold War, a terrorist attack, a technology boom and bust, and numerous negatives in between. Yet, you have also witnessed mind-boggling progress in medical science, transportation, communication, infrastructure, and almost every facet of your life.
To those turning 18 today, welcome to adulthood in America. You are a unique generation. The future of our country rests in your hands. Manage it well and you will be able to celebrate as many blessings as someone turning 90 years old today.
Quote of the week: Donald Rumsfeld: “I would not say that the future is necessarily less predictable than the past. I think the past was not predictable when it started.”
