On Saturday, April 21, America laid to rest former first lady Barbara Bush. Over one thousand people paid their respect in person while millions watched across the world.
You likely know the attention-grabbing headlines of Barbara Bush’s life already: married for 73 years, wife and mother of U.S. Presidents.
But her legacy is larger than that. Watching, listening, and reading a little deeper you learn about a special person that made a big difference. She was a lifelong champion of literacy, a quick-witted matriarch of an influential political family, and a gracious person who treated others with respect.
Her Secret Service code name was Tranquility, and those who served to protect her consistently recount her humble interactions with them and others. She persevered through the trauma of losing her mother in a traffic accident when she was 25 and then losing a daughter to leukemia at age 3.
We all are given both opportunities and challenges in life. How we handle both of them impacts the people around us. Barbara Bush turned a son’s dyslexia into a passion for literacy.
The odds of any one of us being on the national stage are low, but each of us has the opportunity to make a difference in other people’s lives. This is how our personal legacy is written one day at a time.
What will your legacy be? How can we help you work toward it?
