NervousJuly 29, 2020 -

In speaking with many of our clients these days we are finding one overarching theme – a bit of nervous tension. After everything that has happened so far in 2020, who can blame anyone for being a bit on edge?
We yearn for the daily routines that we previously thought were mundane. We want to hug our grandchildren again. We want to clear our minds of any microscopic menaces. We just want normal. Now.
We look in the rearview mirror and see economic shutdowns, unsettling market declines, and COVID-19 chaos. We see today’s headlines full of civil unrest, political bickering, and job uncertainty.
We project a future that is equally (if not more) uncertain. How do we end a pandemic? Who will retain or obtain power in November’s election? Have the markets bounced back too quickly? What is the next surprise 2020 has in store for us?
Through all of this uncertainty our fundamental advice to our clients has not changed:
- Your family’s financial success is primarily driven by how much you save, how much you spend, and how well you develop and execute your long-term plans in a short-term world. You can control most of these factors over time.
- Short-term market moving events lasting less than eight years do not change our long-term investment strategy. You can control your reaction to current events.
- Short-term volatility creates opportunities for patient investors who are willing to buy low(er) or enhance their tax efficiency. You can control how proactive you want to be.
Feeling a lack of control is very uncomfortable for most humans. It creates a nervous energy pulsating through your veins, impacting your decision-making, and sometimes creating an illusion of hopeless chaos. That is only natural.
The antidote for that nervous stress is confidence. Confidence that you have a long-term plan that assumes life is full of short-term challenges. Confidence that you have control over the decisions you make during those challenging times. Confidence that this, too, shall pass, in due time along with the next challenge and the next one.
If you are feeling nervous or uncomfortable, our advisors would be happy to help you regain a sense of control. Just e-mail or call us for an antidote boost or for a second opinion of your current plan.
