Portfolio Stylings
During my most recent haircut, I found myself noticing the salon’s various signs and advertisements featuring a plethora of hairstyles.
There were conservative, close-cut coifs, medium-length, messier manes, and even some dramatic, daring ‘dos on men and women alike. Each was unique to the individual and, no doubt, reflected some aspect of their personality.
Regardless of the style shown – whether featuring gels, curls, or dyes – all of them indicated that the product or service being offered had the ability to help your hair look its best no matter what style you fancy.
Like your hair, your investment allocation can reflect your personality in much the same way.
Maybe you’re a conservative investor and don’t care much for the waves that equity markets can experience.
Perhaps you consider yourself moderate in your risk tolerance, and while you can accept some market fluctuations, you like knowing you hold a portfolio that strikes a balance between bond and equity market allocations.
Or possibly you’re much more aggressive, and comfortable with the bobs and weaves of owning equities if it affords you the potential for higher returns over time.
Undoubtedly, just like there’s a hairstyle for everyone and no one can tell you what is the “right” or “wrong” way to wear it (unless you’re my son or daughter, then I absolutely can do so…), any investment allocation can work for you if you’re comfortable with the trade-offs between risk and reward that it brings.
Also, much like your hair, your portfolio needs to be maintained. Your hair needs periodic trimmings to keep it at your preferred length. Similarly, your portfolio holdings need to be trimmed when they (hopefully) grow beyond their assigned allocations.
A good, thorough daily washing of your hair can work out the dirt and oil that builds naturally as we work and play throughout the day, and a periodic scrubbing of your portfolio at regular intervals can help identify holdings that no longer fit your goals.
Eventually, your investment allocation, like your hairstyle, will change. That perm you sported in your twenties might not suit you in quite the same way in your fifties – and investment allocations also evolve as priorities, responsibilities, and goals change over time.
And just as it’s often proven unwise to change your hairstyle with every new trend, your financial well-being can benefit from avoiding dramatic shifts based on spur-of-the-moment reactions to short-term market movements.
Whether you need to try on a new investment allocation because what you’ve done to this point isn’t working for you, or you just feel like you need a little bit taken off the top to be back in line with what’s comfortable for you, our portfolio stylists (advisors) are at the ready to help.
Together, we can talk through the products and solutions available to you to have your financial plan looking its best.
