Objectivity can be heartless. You can spend most of your life training to be the world’s best in an Olympic event, and another competitor with identical dreams that day can be a mere .001 seconds faster and deprive you of your lifelong aspirations.

The pressure to perform is extreme.

All it takes is one hesitation, a moment of imperfect form, or a fleeting distraction to prevent you from reaching your goal.

Some people thrive under this pressure. Most do not.

For this reason, we do not send a daily report to our clients assessing their progress toward their personal goals. How would you like to receive a report informing you that you slipped up today and must now delay your retirement by three days? Or the financial markets took a dip today and you must work one more week? That would not build confidence.

While the cumulative decisions we make over our lifetimes certainly do determine whether we reach our goals or come up short, the good news is that personal goals are subjective not objective. You have the ability to adjust the finish line as life evolves. You get to decide the effort you wish to give and the desired outcome that is acceptable to you.

Daily progress reports are absurd, but not having a plan and not evaluating progress at regular intervals is ludicrous. Imagine starting a race without knowing which way to run or where the track was. You could waste a lot of time and energy heading away from your personal finish line instead of toward it.

None of our amazing clients are Olympic athletes, but our caring advisors help them work toward their goals as life unfolds. Thankfully, there are no stopwatches involved – just persistently sound counsel and advice over many months, years, and decades.

Quote of the week: Aaron Rodgers: “For me, it’s always been about preparation, and the more prepared I can be each week, the less pressure I feel and the more confident I am. As your confidence grows, it’s only natural that the pressure you feel diminishes.”
